We're a friendly sailing club based on the East
Coast of England, near Ipswich (in Suffolk). Our location offers a superb
variety of sailing in the sheltered rivers and estuaries of the Suffolk and
Essex coastlines at the same time allowing ready access to the open sea beyond
Felixstowe for the more adventurous.
New members are always welcome. You don't have to work for BT to join, the club is open to
everybody, although all members must to be over 18.
Membership - There are three types of
membership. Yacht members
can skipper, train or crew on 'Carina' as well as use the dinghies.
Dinghy members can helm, train or crew on
our four dinghies.
Owner members will have their own boats and join in
with club events such as races and rallies.
The club is fortunate in having a local boat hut and storage yard for owner’s boats.
* Includes early payment discount.
What it costs - the club does not aim to make a profit and we want to keep costs down.
We hold introductory sessions at Waldringfield and Levington. To arrange a friendly meeting with us use the contact form.
If you're new to sailing, then starting with dinghies is a fantastic (and by far the best) way to learn. The club’s dinghies are kept at Waldringfield SC with which we have close ties. The Xenons take a crew of two or three. Our Hartley takes two and can be easily sailed solo whilst the Laser is a single hander for the more confident. The club provides buoyancy aids. About ten sessions should suffice for training. We have several Race series (not too serious) and weekend day trips up or down the Deben, sometimes to sea, as well as casual sailing whenever we like. We sail from Easter to October. You do not have to helm if you don’t want to as normally another member can be found to helm. Dinghy sailing is a great introduction to the yacht although not essential.
We have lots going on throughout the season.
The club owns a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 33i (Carina) which is kept at
Suffolk Yacht Harbor on the River Orwell.
It takes up to six people for day sailing and four overnight in three cabins. We have appropriate
safety equipment, cooking and toilet facilities on board, life-jackets
are provided.
The yacht training scheme runs one or two evenings per week and sometimes at weekends. It is possible to become a qualified skipper in a year or two. For experienced sailors a test sail will enable you to demonstrate your competence.
There is a race series where 'Carina' tries to beat the owner members and Social Sails organised as well as frequent weekend trips. Retired members often use the yacht in the week and generally space can be found for anyone who wants a sail. In the summer there is a cruise split into five one week sections. There is no pressure to become a skipper if you don’t want to as there is always room for crew. Members help with maintenance over winter.
